Kara Lorynn Schuler was born on February 12, 2003. Her delivery was planned, as was her sister Kaylee's. Inducement started the evening before and labor was in full swing by 9:30 am. During labor, her heart rate dropped to dangerously low levels and the doctor used the dreaded vacuum suction cup.
Because of her low heart rate, it was imperative that she be delivered as fast as possible and she was delivered after three very hard pushes. It was a difficult delivery because she came out face up (also known as back labor). She was delivered at 11:39 am and weighed only 6 pounds. Because of the suction cup, she had quite a bruise on the top of her head. She also had quite a gag reflex and would often choke and gag on spit-up. Other than that, she was doing great.
Look at that full head of hair!

Kaylee meets her new little sister.
February 12
We stayed in the hospital for a couple of days. Her big sister, Grandma Faith and daddy all came to visit. The food was actually very good and Mom regained some strength before going home.
Grandma Faith stayed with us for almost two weeks and took great care of all of us. We were glad she could take time out of her busy schedule. Kara ate well and gained weight like a trooper. At her first doctor's visit (five days old), she had already exceeded her birth weight! The doctor was very impressed.
Our beautiful Kara, 4 days old.

Happy Mom and baby
March 2
The day Grandma Faith left, Grammy Karen and Grandpa Jerry came for a visit. Their teaching schedule allowed them to come for almost two weeks. They had a great visit with their grandchildren and in his spare time Jerry took care of a lot of Dad's "honey do" list! A couple of days before Karen and Jerry left, Auntie Chloe came for a visit. She stayed for more than three weeks and helped with Kaylee and Kara as well as a lot of housework. All of our company helped us tremendously and we don't know how we would have managed without them.
Kaylee loves her new sister. She is very curious and always wants to touch and kiss Kara. They are going to be the best of friends. Kaylee often pretends to be Kara to get additional attention.... and of course she gets it.
Kaylee and Kara, like peas and carrots!

Bath time.
March 8
Kara was not real fond of being messed with... diaper changes, umbilical cord care or baths. She is doing better now and is now beginning to smile. She sleeps about 20 hours per day, just awake long enough to eat, burp and poop. She is over 8 pounds now and getting stronger every day.
