GESTATIONAL DIABETES

You know, I don't really understand everything there is to know about diabetes. I do know that, if left unmanaged, it can cause severe medical problems and death. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my first successful pregnancy at about 28 weeks. I was in total denial. I am as healthy as a horse... of course I don't have diabetes! Well, after following a diabetic diet and testing my blood sugar regularly, I found out that I was diabetic. Now in my second successful pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetesat only 9 weeks.

The hardest thing about following a diabetic diet is eating every 2 or 3 hours. I feel like I am constantly eating! Also, with every snack/meal I have to eat protein. Now, that may not sound very difficult but just think.... imagine you are out shopping. You spend a little more time than you had anticipated and you need to eat something... now. You look around for a snack and find vending machines. Chips, cookies, candy, crackers, soda, etc. All carbohydrates. No protein in the lot! Or fast food... a burger is ok but skip those french fries and shake! You really need to be prepared when you leave the house. Glucerna, a meal/snack replacement designed specifically for diabetics, has been an absolute lifesaver for me! I am very fond of the chocolate shake drink and take one with me in an insulated bag where ever I go.
